Deborah Anderson Achieves Advanced Conservation Accreditation

I am delighted to announce that I have been awarded Advanced Level Conservation Accreditation by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).This accreditation recognises senior-level expertise in the conservation, repair, and adaptation of historic buildings across Scotland, and reflects my ongoing commitment to delivering informed, conservation-led advice on listed buildings and heritage projects.

What RIAS Conservation Accreditation at Advanced level  Represents

RIAS Conservation Accreditation has been established to demonstrate that architects have the appropriate knowledge, skills, and experience to work competently within the historic built environment. It is awarded through a peer review process, assessing an architect’s experience, case work, and continuing professional development against defined conservation competencies. The Advanced level represents recognition as a senior conservation specialist, with demonstrated experience in complex heritage projects and decision-making.

Assessment and Recognition

Following peer assessment by two members of the RIAS Conservation Assessors Panel, my application was commended as: “A well-presented application… competences are well evidenced.”This process evaluates practical project experience, professional judgement, and recent work within the historic environment, ensuring accredited architects maintain current and relevant expertise.

Advanced Conservation Expertise

As a RIBA-accredited Conservation Architect and now RIAS Advanced Accredited Architect in Conservation Architecture, I am recognised as having senior-level competence in working with:

  • Listed buildings

  • Historic environments and conservation areas

  • Traditional and vernacular construction

  • Sensitive adaptation and repair projects

  • Project lead on Grant aid projects

This accreditation reflects the depth of experience required to act as a lead professional on conservation-led projects, including those involving complex planning and heritage considerations.

Supporting Listed Buildings and Heritage Projects

Based in Aberdeenshire and working across Scotland, I continue to support both architect practices and private clients with:

  • Listed Building Consent applications

  • Heritage Impact Assessments

  • Conservation statements and planning support

  • Repair and adaptation strategies for historic buildings

  • Pre-purchase and feasibility advice

With over 20 years of professional experience, my focus remains on providing clear, practical advice that helps protect historic fabric while enabling appropriate change.

Final Thoughts

Conservation accreditation is not just a title — it reflects a structured process of peer review, demonstrated experience, and ongoing professional development within the historic environment.
